A Start in Life
Un début dans la vie is a coming-of-age novel centered on the imprudences of youth. Young Oscar Husson, son of a modest widow, is about to enter working life as a notary's clerk. During a journey in a coucou — one of those public coaches in which travelers of every condition are thrown together — on the road to Presles, Oscar, vain and eager to cut a figure, gives way to boasting and lies about his family and connections. Among the passengers, however, travels incognito the Comte de Sérisy, owner of the very estate toward which they are heading, whom Oscar, unwittingly, disparages and ridicules with his bragging. This youthful indiscretion has unhappy consequences and costs the young man his place and the protection intended for him. The narrative thus follows the first humiliations of a boy who must learn, through failure, prudence and restraint. Through the gallery of travelers — the painter Mistigris and his master Schinner, the man of business Georges Marest — Balzac sketches a lively, comic scene of the stagecoach, a social microcosm where appearances deceive and tongues wag too freely. The novel illustrates the idea that entering life is paid for in blunders and disillusionment, and that the ambitious young man must first cure himself of his frivolity. Lighter in tone than other Scenes of Private Life, rich in observations of the world of the roads and notarial offices, Un début dans la vie develops the theme, dear to Balzac, of education through experience and the dangers of self-love in beginners. Oscar will eventually settle down and succeed, but at the cost of his first illusions.
