A Murky Business

French Une ténébreuse affaire Division Scenes of Political Life Published 1841 Pages 213

Une ténébreuse affaire is a detective novel before its time, doubled with a reflection on the arbitrariness of power and reason of state. The action unfolds under the Consulate and the Empire, in a climate of royalist plots and police surveillance. A family of the nobility, the Simeuse and their cousins the d'Hauteserre, former émigrés returned to France, live under the menace of the imperial police, which suspects them of conspiring against Bonaparte. Their devoted cousin, Laurence de Cinq-Cygne, a young woman of fierce energy, protects them. The redoubtable agent Corentin and the policeman Peyrade, instruments of Fouché, weave a murky machination around them. When the mysterious abduction of a high personage, the senator Malin de Gondreville, occurs, the young nobles, innocent, are accused of the crime and arrested on the strength of fabricated or deceptive evidence. An iniquitous trial condemns them, despite the desperate efforts of Laurence and faithful servants to save them. The truth — the existence of a complex police intrigue designed to destroy them — emerges only much later, too late to fully repair the injustice. Balzac denounces the opacity and cruelty of the high police under the Empire, capable of crushing innocents in the name of the interests of the state, and masterfully paints an intrigue of mystery and false trails. The novel, which makes investigation and police manipulation its mainspring, shows how official history conceals subterranean maneuvers and sacrifices of individuals. Through the character of Corentin, a brilliant and glacial agent, the author embodies the occult power of the political police. Une ténébreuse affaire allies political analysis with suspense, and illustrates the fragility of justice before reason of state and the secret intrigues of power.
