The Lesser Bourgeoisie
Les Petits Bourgeois is a novel Balzac left unfinished and which was completed, after his death, by his friend Charles Rabou. The work proposes to study the milieu of the Parisian petty bourgeoisie — its narrow ambitions, its calculations, and its intrigues — thus completing the vast social inquiry of La Comédie humaine at the lower end of the scale of comfortable conditions. At the center of the narrative gravitates the Thuillier family, modest rentiers and former clerks, whose house becomes the theater of the maneuvers of an ambitious and devious character, Théodose de la Peyrade. A lawyer posing as a defender of the poor, but in reality an unscrupulous schemer, la Peyrade weaves a meticulous plan to rise socially: he aims at an advantageous marriage with the young Céleste, heiress of the family, and involves himself in real-estate speculations meant to build his fortune. Around him stirs a whole little world of mediocre go-getters, bigots, calculators, and parvenus, whose baseness and dreams of promotion Balzac paints. The novel explores the springs of careerism in a social class lacking the brilliance of the great bourgeoisie or the aristocracy, but no less devoured by the appetite to appear and to climb. Left unfinished by the author, the text bears the mark of an ambitious project: to show how the spirit of intrigue and speculation has reached even the modest strata of society. The figure of Théodose de la Peyrade, a cold manipulator masking his calculations beneath philanthropy, illustrates the social cynicism Balzac denounces at every level. Despite its posthumous completion, Les Petits Bourgeois offers a precious picture of this intermediate milieu and rounds out the Balzacian fresco of Parisian ambitions.
