The text in figures
The statistics page measures whom Saint-Simon mentions; this one measures how he writes. It covers the full text of the Mémoires in Chéruel's edition, without the editor's chapter summaries or notes: 3,125,315 words, 39,701 distinct forms, 84,438 sentences. Each chapter is dated by the years it covers, and frequencies are given per 10,000 words of the year, since the years do not all fill the same number of pages. The words themselves are French, as Saint-Simon wrote them.

Characteristic vocabulary
The text is that of Chéruel's edition (Hachette, 1856-1858) as transcribed on Wikisource, with its original spelling (« étoit », « connoître »); summaries, notes, note calls and centred headings are left out. A word is a run of letters, hyphens included: « l'abbé » counts as two words, « Saint-Simon » as one. The figures depend on these conventions and on automatic sentence splitting; they are right in order of magnitude, not to the unit. A chapter covering two years shares its words and occurrences between them.
