Summaries
The complete structure of the Mémoires in the Chéruel edition (Hachette, 1856-1858, as digitised on Wikisource): 20 volumes and their 404 chapters. Each volume states what it holds — number of chapters, of running-summary entries and of pages, and the years of the chronicle it covers; click it to open and read the particulars of each of its chapters together with its summary, written in-house. Several volumes may stay open at once, and the two buttons open or close them all. The search runs on the summaries alone: type "poison", "lit de justice" or "Fénelon" and only the chapters whose narrative speaks of it remain, volumes unfolded and the word highlighted. Each chapter leads to two pages: the synopsis of its entries — Chéruel's running summary, entry by entry — and its full text, in French.
The division, the titles and the running summaries are those of the Chéruel edition digitised by Wikisource; the summaries are written in-house (about 34,100 words in English, 42,600 in French). Page bounds come from the facsimile's own markers, the years from the dating of all 404 chapters. Volume 20 opens with four chapters of narrative — the year 1723, the death of Dubois, the portrait of Lauzun, the death of the Regent and the end of the work: they are here like the rest. Its analytical index is served by the "Analytical index" page.
